about

The beginning of this song is a slower, more interpretive version of Chopin’s Nocturne in E flat major Opus 9 No. 2. This song has been an extremely significant song in my life. And for a long time, I couldn’t even play it because my hands would shake too badly and I’d become too overwhelmed. I taught myself this Chopin piece at the age of 18 for my audition piece into Berklee College of Music. But it’s significance goes much deeper than that for me.
A few years after I attended Berklee, tragedy struck my life and I would have never predicted then that this was the last piece I would have ever performed for both my parents. When I would attempt to play this song, I was haunted by their faces. Thinking about how happy and proud they looked at me the last time I performed it for them. It became such a bittersweet memory I couldn’t get passed.
The last time I played it, my dad recorded the song onto his phone and my playing was his ringer, up until the end of his own life. Knowing this was one of the last things he ever heard before he...
This song Valkyrie is about being haunted by tragedy, being haunted by your past, being haunted by your own self, being haunted by all the things you wished you would’ve done better even if you know you would’ve never done those things you fantasize about changing in the first place without learning the cruel, harsh lessons of pain, tragedy and loss.
More importantly, this song is about overcoming your past that haunts you and rising above it. Realizing that you are your own worst enemy. And that in order to move on, you have to kill that inside yourself. I told myself in the past for so long that I would never again play Chopin’s Nocturne. In the past, I knew that it would rule over me. That I would always live in the shadow of my damage. But I made the choice to change the “ending” of my story.
