about

The original name of this song is “The Darkness Before Dawn”. The music for the piece is an adaptation of one of my first orchestrations I ever wrote when I was 8 years old. I later wrote it out in a more legible notation when I was 14 once I learned more how to write out actual music. But I’ve never recorded it until now. The original piece was meant to be a full orchestration and parts were cut out of the original to modify it to making sense for a Synthwave song. But this is the first time EVER that this song has had a voice of its own.
Thinking back to my childhood and why I wrote this song is a difficult one. I remember exactly what I was feeling and thinking during the composition. But it’s hard to put into words. Just like the name of this album Curio, I had a very “Curious” upbringing. On one hand, my childhood was pretty blessed and full of really nice things especially to the outside observer. But on the other hand, it was very saturated with pain, disappoint, harsh abuse, etc.
Ever since I can remember, some of my earliest childhood memories, I can remember being so fascinated by the life story of Beethoven, the composer. I had an audio tape on his life and accounts of how other people viewed him, his behavior, his harsh past. I related to his life in a lot of ways. And through his story, I found strength. I realized that if he could make it through terrible things, so could I. One thing Beethoven was known for was he would go out into nature and listen to the sounds of the wind, the birds, the trees, the rain… So at 8 years old, I started doing this as well. I kept a journal of all the things I heard and interpreted. And started adapting them into piano pieces, and then full orchestrations. I wrote “Ortu” at a time where I felt very low and sad in my life. Pretty hopeless actually. My only true solace was to write and play music.
So, anytime I would experience these painful times within my home life, this particular song would arise in my thoughts. I would hear it so clearly and it always lifted my spirits knowing that one day, life would get better. I would imagine a phoenix rising from the ashes on a war-torn city. Or I’d imagine myself as a warrior dressed in chainmail raising my bloody sword in victory over my enemies. To hear any part of this song into an actual recorded piece is such a weird and personal feeling to me. And to share it feels like such a vulnerable thing to do for me. It feels like my imagination is literally coming to life and it takes me back to that positive feeling of hopefulness and longing for a better life. Yet it also makes me feel like that was a whole other life completely. It makes me question myself. Was that my own past, or was it just a dream?
